Why go there?
Everyone goes to Hong Kong Island, especially to visit Kowloon, but few tourists visit the numerous islands and rural mainland that make up Hong Kong’s New Territories.
What can I see?
Big hat mountain – the nickname for Tai Mo Shan – is one of Hong Kong’s highest mountains. Once a fire breathing volcano, it has long been extinct.

The Rotary Park at Tai Mo Shan is very popular for tourists to take photographs and enjoy the view.
How safe is it?
Wild snakes and other creepy crawlies are scattered across the walking trails in the New Territories.
What should I eat?

At Sai Kung Town you can sit back enjoying your top class seafood, watching the fishermen reel more in by the harbour. If you are feeling brave, step out onto the ocean via the Sai Kung pier and browse the wares of merchants moored on the pier.
What should I pack to go there?
The MacLehose Trail, named after a Hong Kong policitian is a 65 mile hike that may take several days to complete. Those intending to complete this will need to brave the heat and distance in a lot of top hiking clobber. But for those less…enthusiastic about hiking 65 miles in sizzling sunshine, a visit to the New Territories requires only a day rucksack, safe in the knowledge that after a few photographs on beautiful hilltops and in Sai Kung harbour, you can be back at your hotel in Kowloon enjoying a well-deserved mojito.
