Lake Inle Burma

Inle Lake in Burma

Inle Lake is buried in the heart of Shan State in Burma.  It is a top tourist destination and is easily accessible by bus and domestic flights.  Nyaungshwe is the main tourist town nearby, with a selection of good accommodation and dining options, although there are three other smaller towns with basic facilities for tourists.

To really see the lake, you should take to the waters by boat; you can charter your own or join a group tour.   Unique to Inle Lake, try and spot the famous leg-rowing fishermen.  They steer their small vessels by leg, whilst balancing on the edge of their bobbing boats and trying to catch fish in their large nets.    You will sail past magnificent floating gardens and entire communities on stilts.  Wooden houses and various public buildings sit over the waters, whilst people go between buildings by boat.  Floating markets are a great way to see how the lake people do business.

Nga Hpe Kyaung is a large wooden temple on the lake, with great views.  Inside, there are several Buddha images as well as many talented cats.  Nicknamed the Jumping Cat Monastery, monks have taught the cats to jump through hoops!  The cats are rewarded with treats and seem happy to perform for the crowds.

Another wooden building with feline residents is the Inthar Heritage House.  Home to a large collection of beautiful Burmese cats, it showcases the architecture of the Inthar people.

There are great opportunities to get close to nature and visit small villages around the lake, with hiking and cycling being two popular activities.   Also, don’t miss the Red Mountain Vineyards and Winery.  There are spectacular lake views, as well as many delicious locally produced wines to sample.  You will likely spend much longer here than you initially plan!
